The acceptance of applications for the writers' residence in Manchester has started. It is organized by the UNESCO Manchester City of Literature program and the Manchester Literary Festival. The organizers will select two writers to work in the city during the Library Festival in June 2021.
During the three-week online residency, two selected writers will get to know the work of the Manchester Libraries, explore their collections and interact with librarians to learn more about the city's literary heritage. They will also be able to enjoy virtual tours of the city and interact with the local literary community.
Published writers with close ties to the UNESCO City of Literature may apply.
Residence work may include:
- writing or translating into English a short story, essay or series of poems (up to 2000 words) inspired by Manchester;
- an online conversation within the framework of the Library Festival about your work, writers and libraries that inspire you;
- online meeting with a group of writers from Manchester;
- virtual tour of your city;
- an online conversation with a Manchester presenter or writer about your city of literature and the work you have written.
Selected candidates will be awarded a scholarship.
How to Apply
Applications are accepted until May 10, 2021. You need to tell about yourself, your writing work, write a motivation letter, talk about the role of libraries in your life and whether there is a specific library in Manchester where you would like to work; and links to the UNESCO City of Literature. It is also necessary to provide a summary and information on official publications.
If necessary, potential candidates may be interviewed online in May. Online residence starts on May 24 or 31. The Library Festival will take place June 9-13, 2021.
