April 30. Online meeting in the literary studio "Eight". Varlam Shalamov
28.04.2020

On April 30, a new meeting at the Eight literary studio will be held online. Theme - "Varlam Shalamov: more than" Kolyma Tales "".

Varlam Shalamov (1907-1982) - prose writer and poet, creator of one of the most famous literary and journalistic cycles about the life of prisoners in Soviet labor camps in the 1930s - 1950s.

"Kolyma Tales" is a human and literary feat of Shalamov, a man of tragic fate and unbending fortitude. The author describes the camp as an emergency system of relations, where normal human laws hardly apply, and everything that happens in the camp is subordinated to the task of physical survival.

The moderator of the studio, the poet and journalist Sergei Gogin, invites the participants of the online meeting to read Shalamov's stories such as: "On the show", "Carpenters", "Single measurement", "Parcel", "Rain", "Condensed milk", "Tatar mullah and pure air", "Vaska Denisov, pig thief", "Typhoid quarantine".

Based on the stories and memoirs of Shalamov, a serial feature film "Lenin's Testament" (dir. Nikolai Dostal) was shot, which can be found on Youtube.

The meeting will be held in zoom at 18.30 (Ulyanovsk time). Details
