Tartu, the UNESCO City of Literature, has announced the call for applications for the International Writers' Residence. Selected candidates will work in the city for two months and receive a stipend to cover travel and other expenses. Applications are accepted from writers and translators from all over the world. Ulyanovsk authors can also apply as authors from the UNESCO City of Literature.
The first resident will work in Tartu in 2020 from April to May (two months), the second from October to November. Deadline: 21 February. Results will be announced no later than March 2.
The work of the residence in Tartu aims to increase international exchange and communication, facilitate the mobility of writers and translators, create a creative and inspiring environment, and provide writers with the opportunity to present their works to Estonian readers. The program is open to all writers and translators (translating from Estonian to other languages) from all over the world who meet the eligibility criteria.
The resident will work for two months in the former house-museum of the famous Estonian writer Karl Ristikivi (1912–1977), receive a scholarship (600 euros per month), compensation for travel expenses to Tartu and back (up to 350 euros), and will also be able to perform at venues in other cities, at the Tartu International Literary Festival Prima Vista and participate in local literary life.
Documents to be submitted by the candidate
- Application.
- A fragment (up to 5 pages) of a published text (in Estonian or English) or a fragment of a published translation (from Estonian to another language).

Candidate Selection Criteria
- Proficiency in English (at least Upper Intermediate)
- At least one published book (fiction or non-fiction), screenplay, play or translation from Estonian into another language).
- Interest in Estonian culture and literature.
- Willingness to participate in local literary life, including events, meetings, interviews, festivals.
- Work on a literary project during your stay.
